SGS Conducts Construction Supervision for Highway Project ‘Viaducto Bicentenario’ in Mexico City
In August 2008, SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, was awarded a contract to conduct Construction Supervision for Viaducto Bicentenario, a 25 km highway project crossing Mexico City. For the duration of the twenty-six month contract, to be completed by October 31st, 2010, SGS provided compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, including the provision of quality and budget control, safety coordination. SGS also ensured that the construction project was kept within its planned schedule.
Viaducto Bicentenario is the biggest elevated superhighway project in Mexico City, running 25 km from Mexico D.F to Tepotzotlan. Translated as ‘Bicentennial Bridge’, Viaducto Bicentenario makes up part of a ring road system of new toll roads planned for Mexico City and the adjoining Estado de Mexico state. With the aim of easing traffic in the northern part of Mexico City, the elevated viaduct will function as a quick route serving more than nine million residents.
Being the longest viaduct in Mexico, Viaducto Bicentenario is one of the engineering jewels of the country. With a total length of 25 km, the project is the first of its kind in Mexico.
In order to proceed with such an extensive project in compliance with all relevant regulations and valid standards, and in order to provide quality and budget control, safety coordination as well as assure that the construction project was kept within its planned schedule, the entire project required a reliable inspection, verification, testing and certification company.
Due to its extensive experience and competence in similar international projects, SGS Mexico was assigned a contract to provide Construction Supervision for Viaducto Bicentenario in Mexico City by the Mexican State Government.
SGS Construction Supervision for Viaducto Bicentenario
SGS was chosen to provide Construction Supervision during the construction of Viaducto Bicentenario due to its extensive knowledge and competence in projects of this kind.
In August 2008, the SGS team of experts, including the general coordinator, document and report controllers, financial controllers as well as the construction, quality and safety supervisors, began working on the Viaducto Bicentenario superhighway project. For the length of the twenty-six month contract, which is expected to be completed by October 31st, 2010, SGS has provided compliance with all relevant regulations and valid standards, as well as quality and budget control, safety coordination and played a key role in assuring that the construction project is kept within its planned schedule.
As the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, SGS helps the client in proceeding successfully with construction works by reducing technical risks, preventing construction errors and supervising contractors. Construction Supervision conducted by SGS consists of the documentation and project managers’ review, preparation of monthly reports as well as controlling execution programs, deadlines and the budget. Moreover, SGS ensures that the construction work is executed in accordance with the design and other specifications approved by the client and verifies quality of the work and materials used through inspections and verification tests conducted in the portable SGS laboratory. In addition, SGS provides safety coordination by controlling the execution of safety programs.
The biggest challenge for SGS has been carrying out Construction Supervision at night as the Viaducto Bicentenerio is being built from 11pm to 5am during workdays - without full closure of the road under construction from the ring road. However, SGS has successfully coordinated construction works in compliance with all relevant regulations and requirements and has also assured improvement in onsite productivity throughout the entire construction process.
Due to SGS's excellent work, the project was kept within its planned schedule and budget, a key criteria for securing both the Fonadin (Mexican National Infrastructure Fund) and state funding.
For the length of the entire project, SGS has successfully provided professional Construction Supervision services to the full satisfaction of the client.
