In 2006, the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. initiated the development of an international airport on a BOO (build-own-operate) basis, addressing the strong economic growth of India’s Hyderabad region.
With decades of experience in project work and dedicated expertise in project finance, SGS experts provided review and inspection services during construction to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project.
Building a runway, terminal, control tower and everything in between
The success of the Hyderabad International Airportproject relied on highly complex construction work, combining work on Passenger Terminal Buildings (PTB) and Airside and Landside (ALS) construction tasks.
The major ALS work revolved around the construction of a 72m high Air Traffic Control Tower and a 60m wide, 4.2 km long runway. In addition to this, a maze of aprons, taxi ways, approach roads, landscaping, drains and culverts’ UG sumps, a storm water collection pond and compound wall had to be built.
To make sure that all design parameters were strictly adhered to, the onsite SGS experts thoroughly verified design documentation. The Inspection Test Plans (ITP) and analysis of vendor Quality Assurance Provisions and Method Statements enabled the early detection of possible instruction errors and product defects, and saved the project owners precious time and money.
First-class competence takes project to new heights
In the business of running an airport, there is no room for mistakes and errors. Through inspections of incoming materials and Field Quality Checks, SGS professionals ensured that the different buildings housing crucial airport aviation technologies adhered to all relevant quality and safety standards.
The SGS team performed a long series of civil works inspections and field inspections of all electrical and mechanical components, plumbing, firefighting equipment and high voltage cabling. Witnessing the various lab testing of materials used in construction and performing numerous Factory and Site Acceptance Tests, SGS was able to identify and avoid several material defects that might have had a negative impact on the Terminal’s safety and quality record.
After three years of hard work on the part of the contractors and other parties involved, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport began commercial operation in March 2008 and soon entered the top 10 list of the world’s fastest growing airports.
SGS experts, supported by state-of-the-art technology and monitoring facilities, provide customers with a comprehensive range of specialized project finance services, including environmental due diligence, technical due diligence, specification verification, and manufacturing surveys. Once your project is fully operational, SGS, as an independent project surveyor, monitors project operation and reports on project performance, identifying possible deficiencies and recommending corrective actions.
